Josie James, counseling intern (they/them)
My counseling philosophy is grounded in the idea that you are the expert of your life. Every individual is shaped by the world around them, including family, friends, and experiences, and you are the center of that world. Using empathy and compassion, I hope to learn about your experiences and how they inform you as a person and the challenges that you face.
As a queer, nonbinary person, I believe in fostering a safe, affirming, judgment-free space for you to be yourself and process anything that may be on your mind or heart. Utilizing a person-centered, holistic approach, I aim to meet you where you are, learn about your experiences and the social and cultural contexts behind them, and stand with you while you navigate past and current experiences.
I also believe in using a collaborative approach where we can work together to create personalized goals specifically tailored to your needs and empower you to utilize your strengths to meet them.

I ground my counseling approach in a person-centered orientation, where I can receive clients precisely as they are and meet them with empathy and genuineness. I aim to empower clients by respecting their autonomy and personal wisdom as we explore their capacity for growth and healing together. Outlined by the wellness model, I treat clients holistically, recognizing their individual and unique personhood and social and cultural environments. I believe that all interventions should be tailored to the needs of each client to fully engage the counseling practice with the intricacies of the human experience.
I see counseling as a collaborative process where the therapeutic relationship is a partnership between client and counselor. I work side by side with clients to support them in their journey to identify and accomplish goals and overcome challenges. My client work is enriched by my commitment to and passion for social justice. Applying this commitment looks like active engagement in advocacy, honoring and integrating clients' intersectional identities, and acknowledging the systems of power and oppression that impact well-being. Through this collaboration and client-centered approach, I am wholly dedicated to empathetically walking alongside clients as they navigate and participate in the transformational work of counseling.
